What is this 8-day itinerary?
Eight days suits anyone who wants the Yorkshire Wolds Way at its gentlest, or is unsure about long days back to back. Two half days by the Humber let you settle in. No day after that is over 13 miles, which leaves afternoons for Goodmanham's church, the tearooms and the ruins at Wharram Percy.
Read the Yorkshire Wolds Way guide for the whole trail.
Will this 8-day split work for you?
- A gentle start. Two half days by the Humber to find your legs.
- Time to look around. Afternoons free for churches and tearooms.
- Book early. Welton, Wintringham, Millington and Thixendale.
Fitness & effort
Easy to manage if you can walk 9 to 13 miles on most days. The steepest walking is in the dales after Millington, a long series of short grassy climbs. With two half days to start and a flat day near the end, the legs have time to recover.

Day 1
Hessle to Welton
6.1 mi (9.8 km) ↑ 120 m (400 ft) ↓ 70 m (250 ft)
A half day to find your feet: the walk starts under the Humber Bridge and follows the estuary on stones and shingle. There is a high-tide path inland at North Ferriby. Keep to the waymarks there, because one wrong turn leaves you beside the busy A63. Welton Lodge is close to the path.
Example stay Welton Lodge (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 2
Welton to South Cave
6.4 mi (10.4 km) ↑ 250 m (800 ft) ↓ 260 m (850 ft)
The first hill, with an afternoon to spare: woods lift you out of Welton onto Ellerker North Wold, with the whole estuary below. The path drops steeply into Brantingham, where the war memorial was built from the stones of Hull's old town hall. South Cave has pubs and shops for the evening.
Example stay Cave Castle Hotel (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 3
South Cave to Market Weighton
10.5 mi (16.9 km) ↑ 310 m (1,000 ft) ↓ 300 m (1,000 ft)
The loneliest stretch of the week, quiet enough that you may see nobody for hours. Lanes cross High Hunsley Beacon and drop into Swin Dale. At Goodmanham the Goodmanham Arms brews its own ale and the Fiddle Drill serves teas. Leave time for the walk into Market Weighton, about a mile from the path.
Example stay Towthorpe Grange
-
Day 4
Market Weighton to Millington
8.8 mi (14.2 km) ↑ 330 m (1,100 ft) ↓ 210 m (700 ft)
A short, easy day, with the afternoon free in Millington. Nunburnholme's church is just off the path, and Kilnwick Percy Hall's Buddhist centre runs a café open to all. Millington has no shop and no bus, so arrange supper with your bed before you set out.
Example stay Laburnum Cottage Bed And Breakfast
-
Day 5
Millington to Thixendale
11.7 mi (18.8 km) ↑ 420 m (1,400 ft) ↓ 480 m (1,550 ft)
Dale after dale, "a bit of everything": the dales come in quick succession, grassy and quiet. Robert Fuller's wildlife gallery at Fotherdale Farm is a detour "well worth" making. Lunch is at the Seaways café in Fridaythorpe. Thixendale has the Cross Keys and very few beds, which is why it fills first.
Example stay The Cross Keys Inn Thixendale (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 6
Thixendale to Wintringham
12.5 mi (20.1 km) ↑ 400 m (1,300 ft) ↓ 460 m (1,500 ft)
The hardest day of the eight: the highest ground on the Way, then a short, extremely steep drop into Deep Dale. Wharram Percy was dug every summer from the 1950s to 1990, and the finds told the story of a village cleared for sheep. Woods by Settrington Beacon and the Enclosure Rites artwork look over the Vale of Pickering.

-
Day 7
Wintringham to Ganton
8.6 mi (13.8 km) ↑ 250 m (800 ft) ↓ 260 m (850 ft)
An easy day below the hills: start with St Peter's church in Wintringham, cared for by a conservation trust. Field edges run along the foot of the escarpment past the Heslertons, where the Dawnay Arms is a short way off. Sherburn has a shop for tomorrow's lunch, and Ganton's Greyhound is near the path.

-
Day 8 Longest
Ganton to Filey
12.6 mi (20.3 km) ↑ 390 m (1,300 ft) ↓ 400 m (1,300 ft)
The sea at last: the final climb onto the Wolds is above Staxton Brow, and the last dales lead to Muston and Filey. The finish sculpture stands by Filey Brigg. Legend says the Devil dropped his hammer in the sea here and grabbed a fish instead. His curse gave the haddock its name.

These plans follow the Goodmanham branch. Card distances are measured along the trail between the towns. A walk off the path to a bed is extra.
Toward Hessle

Day 2
Ganton to Wintringham
8.6 mi (13.8 km) ↑ 260 m (850 ft) ↓ 250 m (800 ft)

-
Day 3
Wintringham to Thixendale
12.5 mi (20.1 km) ↑ 460 m (1,500 ft) ↓ 400 m (1,300 ft)

-
Day 4
Thixendale to Millington
11.7 mi (18.8 km) ↑ 480 m (1,550 ft) ↓ 420 m (1,400 ft)
The dales come in the same rhythm this way, down one grassy side and up the next. Fridaythorpe is the place to eat, because Huggate is a detour. Millington lies at the bottom of the last dale.
Example stay Laburnum Cottage Bed And Breakfast
-
Day 5
Millington to Market Weighton
8.8 mi (14.2 km) ↑ 210 m (700 ft) ↓ 330 m (1,100 ft)
An easy morning leaving the dales behind. The path drops past Kilnwick Percy and its café and crosses Londesborough Park, where cattle sometimes graze. Market Weighton's shops are a short walk off the line from Goodmanham.
Example stay Towthorpe Grange
-
Day 6
Market Weighton to South Cave
10.5 mi (16.9 km) ↑ 300 m (1,000 ft) ↓ 310 m (1,000 ft)
Goodmanham's pub is the last before South Cave, so eat there or carry food. Swin Dale is the quiet heart of the day, and the lanes over High Hunsley Beacon end with a steep drop into the village.
Example stay Cave Castle Hotel (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 7
South Cave to Welton
6.4 mi (10.4 km) ↑ 260 m (850 ft) ↓ 250 m (800 ft)
A steep pull out of Brantingham leads onto Ellerker North Wold for a last wide view over the estuary. From there it is downhill through woods to Welton.
Example stay Welton Lodge (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 8
Welton to Hessle
6.1 mi (9.8 km) ↑ 70 m (250 ft) ↓ 120 m (400 ft)
The last miles leave the wooded edge of the Wolds at Welton for the flat estuary. If the tide is in, take the path inland at North Ferriby rather than the stones. The finish sculpture sits under the bridge.

8-day itinerary FAQ
Why choose 8 days for the Yorkshire Wolds Way?
For a gentle start and no long days. The first day by the Humber becomes two half days with a night in Welton, and nothing all week is over 12.6 mi (20.3 km).
Where do I sleep on the 8-day?
Welton, South Cave, Market Weighton, Millington, Thixendale, Wintringham and Ganton, then Filey at the finish. Book Welton, Wintringham, Millington and Thixendale first.
Is 8 days too slow for the Yorkshire Wolds Way?
Not if you like time to stop. The half days at the start and the short day into Millington leave afternoons for Brantingham's war memorial, Goodmanham's church and a tearoom or two.
Where do I stay in Welton?
Welton Lodge, a B&B close to the path. Welton has few beds, so book it early.
