What is this 8-day itinerary?
Add a night to the classic seven-day route and every day gets shorter — that's the eight-day. The stage first-timers dread, the 18.6 mi (30 km) haul from Tyndrum to Kingshouse, splits at Bridge of Orchy into an easy 6.8 mi (11 km) afternoon and a standalone 11.8 mi (19 km) crossing of Rannoch Moor the next day. The moor gets a fresh morning of its own, and nothing on the itinerary feels like a slog. It's a relaxed pace for walkers who would rather soak up the scenery than race the light, without dropping to rest days.
Read the West Highland Way guide for the whole trail.
Will this 8-day split work for you?
- Shorter days: the 7-day plus one night, so Tyndrum → Kingshouse is two mornings, not one.
- First long trail, easier: start here if seven days feels tight but you still want a walking itinerary, not a holiday with rest days.
- Same loch day: Rowardennan → Inverarnan is unchanged. Inversnaid is lunch, not the night.
- Walking days: some operators sell “9 days / 8 nights”; they count travel. This page is eight days on trail.
Fitness & effort
This is one of the easier ways to walk the trail. Most days sit comfortably under 13.7 mi (22 km), and the two hardest sections — the rocky north shore of Loch Lomond and the crossing of Rannoch Moor — are met with fresh or well-rested legs. You still need to be happy walking day after day and to handle one sustained climb at the Devil's Staircase, but there are no punishing distances. If you can manage a hilly 11.2–12.4 mi (18–20 km) day and repeat it, eight days is well within reach.

Day 1
Milngavie to Drymen
12.0 mi (19.3 km) ↑ 320 m (1,050 ft) ↓ 300 m (1,000 ft)
A relaxed first day out of the city. From the obelisk in Milngavie the path winds through Mugdock's woodland and past quiet lochans, shaking off the suburbs within an hour or two, with the Campsie Fells for company. There is no climbing to speak of and no reason to hurry on the eight-day. Drymen sits a short step off the trail, with pubs and a shop to settle into for the night.

Day 2
Drymen to Rowardennan
14.8 mi (23.8 km) ↑ 770 m (2,550 ft) ↓ 810 m (2,650 ft)
The scenery steps up today. A forest climb brings you to Conic Hill, which sits on the Highland Boundary Fault and gives the first grandstand view of Loch Lomond and its islands. Down at Balmaha there is food and a shop before the path traces the wooded eastern shore to Rowardennan, beneath Ben Lomond. It is a moderate day rather than a hard one, and a fine introduction to what the loch has in store.

-
Day 3
Rowardennan to Inverarnan
13.9 mi (22.3 km) ↑ 740 m (2,450 ft) ↓ 750 m (2,450 ft)
The trail's wildest day, and the one to take slowly. Beyond Rowardennan the path clings to the loch through oak woods, working over roots and rock where the going is slow but never dull; Inversnaid, with its hotel and waterfall, marks the halfway point. It is not the distance that tires people here, it is the terrain, so give it the whole day. The Drovers Inn or Beinglas at the loch head is a characterful place to land.

-
Day 4
Inverarnan to Tyndrum
11.9 mi (19.1 km) ↑ 590 m (1,950 ft) ↓ 370 m (1,200 ft)
An easy, scenic day to reset after the loch. The route follows Glen Falloch and its waterfalls up into more open country, then old drove and military roads carry you past Crianlarich toward Tyndrum. Nothing about the walking is difficult, and Tyndrum — with its shops, cafés, and the Green Welly — is the best resupply on the trail. A gentle day that banks energy for the ones ahead.

-
Day 5
Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy
6.9 mi (11.1 km) ↑ 160 m (500 ft) ↓ 230 m (750 ft)
The shortest day of the itinerary, and the reward for adding a night. A well-graded old road runs through open glen with Beinn Dorain's great sweep of hillside ahead, and the walking is easy the whole way. Bridge of Orchy is little more than a hotel, a station, and a bridge, but it is perfectly placed to break the moor into two. Arrive early and rest — tomorrow is Rannoch.

Day 6
Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse
12.0 mi (19.3 km) ↑ 500 m (1,650 ft) ↓ 400 m (1,300 ft)
Rannoch Moor as its own day, which is exactly why the eight-day exists. A climb past the Inveroran Inn leads onto the moor — a huge, empty, beautiful expanse of bog, lochans, and distant peaks, with the mountains of Glencoe drawing you on. It is shorter and less punishing than tackling it straight after Tyndrum, though still fully exposed, so keep an eye on the weather. The lone Kingshouse Hotel waits at the far side.

-
Day 7
Kingshouse to Kinlochleven
8.8 mi (14.2 km) ↑ 430 m (1,400 ft) ↓ 670 m (2,200 ft)
A short day built around one famous climb. From Kingshouse the path rises to the Devil's Staircase, the highest point on the Way — the zig-zags are steeper than they are long, and the name is a legacy of the soldiers who built the road, not a warning about the grade. Beyond the top comes a long descent past the Blackwater dam into Kinlochleven. Half a day's walking, and a whole afternoon to enjoy the village.
Example stay Tailrace Inn (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 8 Longest
Kinlochleven to Fort William
15.0 mi (24.2 km) ↑ 710 m (2,350 ft) ↓ 710 m (2,350 ft)
A grand finish, though not an easy one. The day opens with a stiff climb to the Lairig Mòr, a broad and lonely pass ringed by the Mamores, then settles into a long valley walk before Ben Nevis finally fills the horizon. The Way ends, as it has for generations of walkers, at the statue in Fort William. Trains and buses run the same afternoon, or stay on to tackle the Ben.

Day 1 Longest
Fort William to Kinlochleven
15.0 mi (24.2 km) ↑ 710 m (2,350 ft) ↓ 710 m (2,350 ft)
Day one from Fort William is the Lairig Mor the other way. The statue is behind you by mid-morning; the climb toward the Mamores is the work. Kinlochleven is a full village night, easier to land in than Kingshouse.
Example stay Tailrace Inn (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 2
Kinlochleven to Kingshouse
8.8 mi (14.2 km) ↑ 670 m (2,200 ft) ↓ 430 m (1,400 ft)
You climb out of Kinlochleven first (that is the work), then down the staircase to Kingshouse. A short day on the map, still a weather day on the ridge. The hotel is isolated; book it.
Example stay Kingshouse Hotel (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 3
Kingshouse to Bridge of Orchy
12.0 mi (19.3 km) ↑ 400 m (1,300 ft) ↓ 500 m (1,650 ft)
Moor first, then down to Bridge of Orchy. Same weather risk, fewer miles than a Tyndrum finish. The hotel is the village.
Example stay Bridge of Orchy Hotel (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 4
Bridge of Orchy to Tyndrum
6.9 mi (11.1 km) ↑ 230 m (750 ft) ↓ 160 m (500 ft)
The same easy road back to Tyndrum. Resupply and a wider choice of beds. A recovery day before or after the moor.
Example stay Tyndrum Lodges (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 5
Tyndrum to Inverarnan
11.9 mi (19.1 km) ↑ 370 m (1,200 ft) ↓ 590 m (1,950 ft)
Open glen back toward the loch. Crianlarich is the useful pause. The Drovers or Beinglas is a busier night than Tyndrum; you are heading toward trees and water again.
Example stay The Drovers Inn (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 6
Inverarnan to Rowardennan
13.9 mi (22.3 km) ↑ 750 m (2,450 ft) ↓ 740 m (2,450 ft)
Same north-shore rock, walking south. Inversnaid is still the middle. Progress is slow either way. This is not the day to chase a bus. Rowardennan is a quiet loch-foot night.
Example stay Rowardennan Hotel (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 7
Rowardennan to Drymen
14.8 mi (23.8 km) ↑ 810 m (2,650 ft) ↓ 770 m (2,550 ft)
Loch shore first, then Conic Hill as a climb toward Drymen. Balmaha is still the lunch stop. The hill is steeper this way in the morning; the forestry tracks after it are a relief.
Example stay The Drymen Inn (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 8
Drymen to Milngavie
12.0 mi (19.3 km) ↑ 300 m (1,000 ft) ↓ 320 m (1,050 ft)
The last miles into Milngavie are the softest on the trail: parkland and suburb after the hills. Finish at the obelisk in the town centre; the train to Glasgow is a few minutes’ walk.

8-day itinerary FAQ
Is 8 days a good length for the West Highland Way?
Yes, especially if you want a comfortable pace. It is the seven-day itinerary with one extra night, which splits the long Rannoch Moor day in two and keeps most days under 13.7 mi (22 km). It is a good choice for a first long-distance walk, or for anyone who would rather take in the scenery than push hard.
How is the 8-day different from the 7-day?
The only change is one extra night at Bridge of Orchy, which breaks the seven-day's longest stage — Tyndrum to Kingshouse — into two easier days. Rannoch Moor becomes its own shorter crossing, and the rest of the itinerary is the same. It is the seven-day made more relaxed, not a different route.
Which is the hardest day?
Day 3, Rowardennan to Inverarnan, along the wild north shore of Loch Lomond — slow, rocky ground where the terrain, not the distance, is the challenge. It is the same demanding stretch on every itinerary; the eight-day just makes sure you meet it with rested legs.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
Yes. Even with eight stops, beds are limited at the loch-head inns, Bridge of Orchy, Kingshouse, and Kinlochleven, and they fill months ahead for summer. Fix your overnight stops before you settle on a start date.
Should I use a baggage transfer service?
It is popular even on the relaxed eight-day. The days are shorter, but the north shore of Loch Lomond and the climbs are still hard work with a full pack, and transfer services move your main bag between stops for a modest daily fee so you carry only a day pack.
Can I download a GPX for the 8-day West Highland Way?
Yes. Open this itinerary in the planner (free, no account). Download a full-route GPX or per-day files for Garmin, Komoot, or your phone. You can export the preset unchanged or edit overnight stops first.
