What is this 5-day itinerary?
Five days is a challenge crossing of the South Downs Way, and it is a walker's own count. You camp at the Sustainability Centre, then sleep at Cocking, Steyning and a ridge campsite at Housedean, above Lewes. The last morning is the long one: Alfriston only for lunch, then the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head before the promenade. Start that day at first light.
Read the South Downs Way guide for the whole trail.
Will this 5-day split work for you?
- Walkers who already do long days and want the whole trail in five.
- Campsites at the Sustainability Centre and at Housedean. Lewes and Alfriston are not nights.
- The last day is about 25 miles (40 km) and includes the cliffs. Start it at first light.
Fitness & effort
This is a hard week, not a first long walk. Every day is long, and the last is about 25 miles (40 km), from the Housedean campsite to Eastbourne, with Alfriston only as lunch and the Seven Sisters after it. Cocking to Steyning is about 21 miles (34 km). The path is waymarked. Take a map. Carry food, because the ridge has few shops. If that last day sounds like too much, the six-day keeps the cliffs as their own morning, and the eight-day is the usual first walk.

Day 1
Winchester to Sustainability Centre
19.4 mi (31.3 km) ↑ 620 m (2,050 ft) ↓ 450 m (1,500 ft)
A long first day, and the night is the Sustainability Centre, not East Meon. Chilcomb is where you may hear the ranges, and Cheesefoot Head looks toward the Solent. Beacon Hill drops through Exton and Meonstoke. Old Winchester Hill is the fort, then Whitewool Farm and the climb to the centre, once a naval training site, with a cafe on the path. East Meon is the village below. Do not walk down to it. Butser Hill is tomorrow morning, close to the centre, so stop and book the campsite.

-
Day 2
Sustainability Centre to Cocking
16.6 mi (26.8 km) ↑ 560 m (1,850 ft) ↓ 660 m (2,150 ft)
The shortest of these five, and it still carries Butser Hill, the highest point on the Way, near the start. You drop through the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. Buriton, under the chalk pits, is lunch, not a night. Harting Down and the Devil's Jumps follow, then the descent to Cocking. Beds there are few. Book it. When the village is full, the night may be a taxi to Midhurst. Eat what you can. Tomorrow joins the wooded ridge and Chanctonbury into one walk.

-
Day 3
Cocking to Steyning
21.2 mi (34.1 km) ↑ 720 m (2,350 ft) ↓ 640 m (2,100 ft)
The other very long day. The wooded climb over Bignor Hill comes first, and a Roman road shows in the turf. The villa is a detour. Amberley, by the Arun, is lunch and the halfway point, with a train, not the night. Then the steep pull up Amberley Mount, the pub and shop at Washington, and the beech ring at Chanctonbury. Steyning is the drop off the ridge. Stop. Do not walk on to the Adur. Devil's Dyke and Ditchling Beacon are both tomorrow.

-
Day 4
Steyning to Housedean
18.6 mi (29.9 km) ↑ 630 m (2,050 ft) ↓ 770 m (2,550 ft)
Devil's Dyke and Ditchling Beacon share this walk, with the Jack and Jill windmills between them. Housedean is a campsite on the path, before the drop into Lewes. Stay on the ridge. The town is not a night, and the walk down would have to be climbed back. Eat at the campsite and fill your bottles. Tomorrow is the longest day of the five, with Alfriston only as lunch and the cliffs after it. A tired start will make that morning longer.

Day 5 Longest
Housedean to Eastbourne
24.7 mi (39.8 km) ↑ 1,050 m (3,450 ft) ↓ 1,040 m (3,400 ft)
This is the longest day, and the cliffs are on it, not saved for a morning of their own. The path skirts Lewes, crosses the Ouse, and runs the open crest at Firle Beacon, barely a tree. Alfriston is lunch. Walkers then take the Cuckmere footpath and the Seven Sisters, not the bridleway by Jevington. Between Cuckmere Haven and Beachy Head the edge is unprotected and undercut. Stay off it. Birling Gap has a cafe. Beachy Head is the last climb, then the promenade. Start at first light. One walker who finished this reached Eastbourne after dark.

Cross-check: National Trails . Most people take 8 or 9 days to walk the 100 miles (160 km). Distances on the cards are measured on the imported line. The climb printed for cyclists is not the walk.

Day 2
Housedean to Steyning
18.6 mi (29.9 km) ↑ 770 m (2,550 ft) ↓ 630 m (2,050 ft)

Day 4
Cocking to Sustainability Centre

Day 5
Sustainability Centre to Winchester
19.4 mi (31.3 km) ↑ 450 m (1,500 ft) ↓ 620 m (2,050 ft)
You leave the centre and drop toward Whitewool Farm, then climb Old Winchester Hill. Exton is in the valley before the steep pull to Beacon Hill. Cheesefoot Head is the last wide view before the fields run into Winchester.

5-day itinerary FAQ
Is five days realistic?
Only if you already walk long days. No sold holiday uses these nights for the whole trail. The last day is about 25 miles (40 km) and includes the Seven Sisters. Cocking to Steyning is about 21 miles (34 km). The six-day keeps the cliffs as their own morning. The eight-day is the usual first walk. Start the last day at first light.
Which day is the hard one?
Housedean to Eastbourne. Alfriston is lunch, then the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head come at the end of an already long day. Cocking to Steyning is the other very long one, with Amberley as lunch and Chanctonbury after it. The walk from the Sustainability Centre to Cocking is the shortest of the five, and it still includes Butser Hill.
Do I need to book the nights?
Yes. The Sustainability Centre and Housedean are campsites, and both come before a hard morning. Cocking has few beds, and a taxi to Midhurst is the fallback. Steyning is the night below Chanctonbury. Lewes and Alfriston are not stops. Book the four nights before you rely on a bag.
Can I get my bag carried?
Yes, and on this week you will want it. A bag a day is usually £10 to £25, ready in the morning. Ask whether your dates are inside the season. In 2026 the holidays ran to late October. Book the beds, including both campsites, before the bag.
Can I download a GPX for the 5-day South Downs Way?
Yes. Open this itinerary in the planner (free, no account). Download a full-route GPX or per-day files for Garmin, Komoot, or your phone. You can export the preset unchanged or edit overnight stops first.
