Cross-check: National Trails route description . The walk follows that page, opened 18 October 2026. Miles named in the questions are the GOV.UK visit page of the same day. Distances on this page are measured between these ends.
The walk
Little in the way of hills. The route description calls this a section along the edges of arable fields, and says the Wall is easy to miss. Look for the ditch on the north side of the road, impressive in places, and for a ridge in the fields to the south. Between them the Wall lies under the B6318, the Military Road, built by General Wade in the 18th century. A Roman stone shows in the embankment here and there. Chollerford is where that road stretch ends and the ground starts to lift.

The ditch and the ridge
North of the road the ditch is the clear earthwork. South of it, a ridge in the fields. The route description says the Wall itself is the line you cannot see, under the modern road.
-
General Wade's road
The B6318 is called the Military Road for Wade's 18th century supply roads, built in response to the Jacobite rising, not for the Romans. Roman stone still turns up in the bank.
-
Chesters
The visit page places Chesters Roman Fort close to the start of the next section, at Chollerford. This is the fort that marks the change from the road to the higher ground.

Section 2: Heddon-on-the-Wall to Chollerford overview
The ground
- Field edges
- Military Road
- Ditch
- Little climb
A long day of field edges beside a road. The climbing waits for the next section. Easier underfoot than the crags, and longer than it feels while you are on the flat. The 8-day, 9-day and 10-day plans split it with a night at East Wallhouses. The 7-day walks it in one go.
