The walk

The last day on the moors has two summits. Captain Cook's Monument stands on Easby Moor, and Roseberry Topping, nicknamed Yorkshire's Matterhorn, rises on a steep spur with a wide view from the top. Guisborough Woods follow, the longest forestry on the Way, sheltered but full of junctions. At the end, farmland leads down to the sea at Saltburn.

  2. Captain Cook's Monument

On Easby Moor above Great Ayton, where Cook went to school. The Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum in the village is worth the detour.

  3. Spur

    Roseberry Topping

Nicknamed Yorkshire's Matterhorn, 320 m (1,050 ft). A steep climb off the main line, about 1.2 miles (2 km) each way, with a wide view from the top.

  4. Guisborough Woods

The longest forestry on the Way, sheltered and easy on the feet. Highcliff Nab, at its edge, looks over Guisborough and the plain.

  • Fields

The longest inland section, and the most varied: moor, a steep summit, forest, then fields. Gentler than the high moors before it, with more shelter and more villages. The cliffs after Saltburn are steeper.
