What is this 9-day itinerary?
Nine days is the standard Cleveland Way, and the length the trail body lists. The first four cross heather moor and the Cleveland Hills, where the hardest day is kept short. At Saltburn the path meets the sea and turns south, and the rest of the walk is cliff path that dips into fishing villages and bays.
Read the Cleveland Way guide for the whole trail.
Will this 9-day split work for you?
- A first long walk. The trail body lists 9 days for the whole trail.
- Walkers who want the Cleveland Hills as a short day of their own, and a lunch stop in Staithes and Whitby.
- Two hill nights are a short walk off the path, at Clay Bank Huts and Newton under Roseberry. Book those, Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough first.
Fitness & effort
You should be happy walking 8 miles (13 km) to 16 miles (25 km) a day, several days running. The Cleveland Hills day is short but climbs over five moors in a row. On the coast the climbs are short and many, and they add up. The path is waymarked, but carry a map or GPS: mist on the moors and gaps in phone signal are the real hazards.

Toward Filey
Helmsley to Filey in 9 days
Helmsley to Filey, the way most walk, with the wind more often behind you and the moors before the sea.

-
Day 1
Helmsley to Kilburn
8.4 mi (13.6 km) ↑ 360 m (1,200 ft) ↓ 140 m (450 ft)
A gentle start, with Rievaulx Abbey a short detour from the woods of Nettledale. The climb to Sutton Bank is steady, and James Herriot called the view over the Vale of York the finest in England. Kilburn is down off the edge below the White Horse, which keeps the first day short and puts a climb at the start of the second.
Example stay The Forresters Arms
-
Day 2
Kilburn to Osmotherley
12.8 mi (20.7 km) ↑ 320 m (1,050 ft) ↓ 430 m (1,400 ft)
Back up to Sutton Bank, then north along the limestone edge of the Hambleton Hills. Gormire Lake below is one of only three natural lakes in Yorkshire. The drove road is broad and easy but open to the weather, and there is nowhere to buy food, so carry lunch. Osmotherley has pubs and a hostel, and the hills start tomorrow.
Example stay Vane House Bed and Breakfast Osmotherley
-
Day 3
Osmotherley to Clay Bank Top
10.9 mi (17.6 km) ↑ 840 m (2,750 ft) ↓ 710 m (2,350 ft)
The hardest walking of the trip, which is why the day is short. The flags help, but the moor between them can be boggy after rain, and each climb is followed by a drop and another climb. Lord Stones café at Carlton Bank is the only stop. There is no bed at Clay Bank Top itself, so the night is at Clay Bank Huts, a short walk away, and they offer a pick-up.
Example stay Clay Bank Huts (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 4
Clay Bank Top to Newton under Roseberry
13.8 mi (22.1 km) ↑ 570 m (1,850 ft) ↓ 550 m (1,800 ft)
Longer than it looks, because both nights sit a short way off the path. Urra Moor is the high point, and in mist it is easy to follow a bridleway that leaves the Way, so check the line out of Clay Bank Top. Kildale is the first place to eat. From Captain Cook's Monument you drop off the ridge to the King's Head at Newton under Roseberry.
Example stay The King's Head Inn (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 5
Newton under Roseberry to Saltburn-by-the-Sea
10.7 mi (17.2 km) ↑ 360 m (1,200 ft) ↓ 640 m (2,100 ft)
The moors end today. Roseberry Topping is a steep spur with a wide view, worth the extra climb. Guisborough Woods follow, the longest forestry on the Way, where the junctions need watching. Farmland brings you down to Saltburn, its pier and Cliff Lift, for an easy evening before the cliffs.
Example stay Saltburn House (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 6
Saltburn-by-the-Sea to Runswick Bay
12.6 mi (20.3 km) ↑ 490 m (1,600 ft) ↓ 520 m (1,700 ft)
The first day on the cliffs, short in miles and steep in places. The drop into Skinningrove and the climb to Boulby, the highest cliff on England's east coast, come early, and the edge is unfenced in places. Staithes, an old fishing village with pubs and cafés, is the stop for lunch. Runswick Bay is a short walk beyond.
Example stay The Royal Hotel (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 7
Runswick Bay to Robin Hood's Bay
15.2 mi (24.5 km) ↑ 500 m (1,650 ft) ↓ 460 m (1,500 ft)
Drops into bays and climbs back out, from Runswick Bay to Sandsend. Whitby breaks up the day, and it is where to buy supplies, because Robin Hood's Bay has no large shop. After the abbey the cliff top is easy going, and Robin Hood's Bay waits at the end, its houses packed onto the cliff edge.
Example stay North Ings - Robin Hood's Bay (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 8 Longest
Robin Hood's Bay to Scarborough
15.7 mi (25.3 km) ↑ 560 m (1,850 ft) ↓ 600 m (1,950 ft)
The longest day of the plan, and the hilliest on the coast. The path drops to sea level at Boggle Hole and again at Stoupe Beck, then climbs gradually to Ravenscar. Later, Hayburn Wyke's wooden steps are slippery after rain. Keep something in reserve, because these small climbs tire you late in the day before Scarborough.
Example stay Clifton Hotel Scarborough (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 9
Scarborough to Filey
8.1 mi (13.1 km) ↑ 250 m (800 ft) ↓ 210 m (700 ft)
The easiest day on the coast, and a gentle finish. The cliffs run above Cayton Bay and past Holbeck, where a hotel slid into the sea in 1994. Filey Brigg, a rocky point out into the sea, is the end of the trail. Take care on its rocks when they are wet, and leave time for the train home from Filey.
Finish Cleveland Way Finish
Cross-check: Cleveland Way trail information on National Trails . The trail body lists 9 days for the 109 miles (175 km). Distances on the cards are measured along the trail on our line. A walk off the path to a bed is extra.
Toward Helmsley
Filey to Helmsley in 9 days
The same nights, starting at Filey. The coast comes first and the Cleveland Hills near the end.

Day 1
Filey to Scarborough
8.1 mi (13.1 km) ↑ 210 m (700 ft) ↓ 250 m (800 ft)
A gentle start from Filey Brigg along the cliffs above Cayton Bay. This coast is slipping into the sea, so stay on the signed path. Many places in Scarborough want a two-night stay, so book early.
Example stay Clifton Hotel Scarborough (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 2 Longest
Scarborough to Robin Hood's Bay
15.7 mi (25.3 km) ↑ 600 m (1,950 ft) ↓ 560 m (1,850 ft)
Leave Scarborough under the castle and walk north to Hayburn Wyke, a wooded bay with a waterfall. Its steps are slippery when wet. From Ravenscar the path dips to sea level twice before Robin Hood's Bay.
Example stay North Ings - Robin Hood's Bay (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 3
Robin Hood's Bay to Runswick Bay
15.2 mi (24.5 km) ↑ 460 m (1,500 ft) ↓ 500 m (1,650 ft)
The cliff top from Robin Hood's Bay to Whitby is easy, and the abbey stays in sight ahead. Buy lunch in the town. The afternoon passes Sandsend before the climb back out to Runswick Bay.
Example stay The Royal Hotel (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 4
Runswick Bay to Saltburn-by-the-Sea
12.6 mi (20.3 km) ↑ 520 m (1,700 ft) ↓ 490 m (1,600 ft)
The climb out of Runswick Bay is the morning's first effort. Staithes is a good early stop, because Boulby is a long rise behind it. Then the path drops steeply to Skinningrove before the easier cliff top to Saltburn.
Example stay Saltburn House (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 5
Saltburn-by-the-Sea to Newton under Roseberry
10.7 mi (17.2 km) ↑ 640 m (2,100 ft) ↓ 360 m (1,200 ft)
A morning inland from the sea, past Skelton and up into Guisborough Woods, where the junctions need watching. Roseberry Topping is the afternoon's steep spur. The King's Head waits below it at Newton under Roseberry.
Example stay The King's Head Inn (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 6
Newton under Roseberry to Clay Bank Top
13.8 mi (22.1 km) ↑ 550 m (1,800 ft) ↓ 570 m (1,850 ft)
Climb from Newton under Roseberry to Captain Cook's Monument, then down through Kildale and up onto the open moor. There is nothing to buy after Kildale, so carry the afternoon's food. Clay Bank Huts are a short walk from the top, with a pick-up on offer.
Example stay Clay Bank Huts (opens in a new tab)
-
Day 7
Clay Bank Top to Osmotherley
10.9 mi (17.6 km) ↑ 710 m (2,350 ft) ↓ 840 m (2,750 ft)
From Clay Bank Huts, the climb to the Wainstones opens a run of five moors. The flags keep each climb steady, but there are a lot of them, so rest at Lord Stones. The views reach north over Teesside all afternoon.
Example stay Vane House Bed and Breakfast Osmotherley
-
Day 8
Osmotherley to Kilburn
12.8 mi (20.7 km) ↑ 430 m (1,400 ft) ↓ 320 m (1,050 ft)
Out of Osmotherley the drove road climbs onto the Hambleton ridge, open to the weather and with no cafés. The edge runs steadily south to Sutton Bank, and the drop below the White Horse to Kilburn ends it.
Example stay The Forresters Arms
-
Day 9
Kilburn to Helmsley
8.4 mi (13.6 km) ↑ 140 m (450 ft) ↓ 360 m (1,200 ft)
The morning climbs from Kilburn past the White Horse to Sutton Bank, the last wide view of the walk. After that the field paths and woods drift down to Helmsley. They can be muddy after rain, and Rievaulx is worth the detour on the way.

9-day itinerary FAQ
Is nine days the right length for a first walk?
Yes. The trail body lists 9 days for the 109 miles (175 km). This plan keeps the Cleveland Hills as a short day, and no coast day is much over 15 miles (24 km). If you want a gentler coast, the 10-day adds nights in Staithes and Whitby.
Which day is the hard one?
Osmotherley to Clay Bank Top, over five moors in a row. It is short in miles, which is why it ends where it does. Robin Hood's Bay to Scarborough is the longest day, a string of short, steep climbs on the cliffs.
Where do I sleep near Clay Bank Top?
There is no bed at the top. The plan uses Clay Bank Huts, about 1.2 miles (1.9 km) away, which offer a pick-up from Clay Bank Top. Great Broughton, about 2.5 miles (4 km) down the road, has hotels if the huts are full.
