The walk
The walk starts gently, below the ruins of Helmsley Castle. Quiet woods and ponds fill the valley at Nettledale, and Rievaulx Abbey stands just off the path. The climb out of the Rye Valley is steady rather than steep. At Sutton Bank the land drops away over the Vale of York, the view James Herriot called the finest in England.
